biography

Roberto Almagno was born in Aquino in 1954. Having moved to Rome while very young, from 1968 to 1971 he became, first, a pupil of Giuseppe Mazzullo and then, at the Rome academy of art, of Pericle Fazzini who was to have a determining influence on his interests and on the development of his work.

In 1975 he took part in the “X Quadriennale di Roma” and, in 1976, he held his first solo show in Livorno, where he presented five sculptures in iron and stone, and twenty-five drawings.

In 1980 he gave up figurative stone sculpture in order to devote himself to experimental researches which were to lead him to arrive at his own personal style. Dating from this period was his highly personal choice, one which was to continue uninterrupted, of the use of a single material: wood. The debut of this new research was in his solo show in 1992 at the Gallerie L’Isola in Rome.

In 1994 he took part in the 46th Premio Michetti competition  where he won first prize with his sculpture Malena. From this point on his exhibitions proliferated with positive results.

In 2006 he installed his work Sciamare, notable for its nobility and dimensions, in the Sala Regia of Palazzo Venezia, Rome. This work consists of 25 wooden elements sprinkled with ashes and it occupied the whole surface of the immense room: his standing as one of the most significant Italian sculptors of his generation no doubt dates from this moment.

In 2010 he took part in Shanghai Expo, a section of the 2010 Universal Exhibition.

He held his first solo exhibitions in London, in 2012, and in New York, in 2015.
