biography

Jiří Kolář was born on 24 September 1914 in Protivin, Bohemia. In 1922 his family moved to Kladno near to Prague. After an adolescence of casual work, at the age of sixteen he discovered the Czech edition of Les mots en liberté futuristes by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, which introduced him to the world of modern poetry, fundamental for his future career in art. As a result of his introduction to Surrealism, he began to make use of collage. In 1937 he held his first solo show at the Mozarteum in Prague.

In 1941, during the German occupation, he published his first collection of poetry and, in November 1942, he founded the “Skupina 42” group together with other poets, painters, art historians, a sculptor, and a photographer. From 1946 to 1948 he travelled to Germany, Paris, and Great Britain and, in 1952, he published The Liver of Prometheus in which, through an assembly of poetry, prose, and images, he denounced the dramatic Czechoslovakian situation after the establishment of the communist regime. A harsh telling of the truth that, together with other writers, cost him nine months of imprisonment and a prohibition on publishing until 1964.

Towards the end of the 1960s he exhibited in Germany and also in Brazil where, in 1969, he was awarded a prize at the X São Paulo Biennale; there followed exhibitions in Canada and in Japan. In 1975, 1978, and 1985, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York organised three solo shows of his work. Exhibitions in prestigious venues then followed throughout the world.

In 1983 he finished his Dictionary of Methods, in which he passed in review the different collage techniques he used in making his works, many of which were of his own invention.  His works by then were to be found in all the major museums in the world.

In 1991 he was awarded the Seifert Prize and was nominated an honorary citizen of Prague. In 1999, for reasons of health, he returned to Prague, definitively leaving Paris where he had lived since 1980. He died in August 2002.
